This novella is beautifully written and expertly crafted. Not a word is wasted, as the drowning protagonist, both literally and figuratively, reflects on his life: from the depths of despair to ultimate redemption and future hope. Powerful and visceral descriptions put the reader slap bang in the centre of the story, seeing, smelling and tasting the true essence of the narrative.

I read this story twice, each time at a single sitting. It's a satisfying and ultimately uplifting read.

In a matter of 55 pages the writer manages to take the reader you through the "love of a lifetime", its pleasures and agonies aligning simultaneously. The sentiment expressed inside is powerful and engaging. In a bold attempt at suicide in which he later clings to the life he wanted so desperately to end he finds a new beginning both with the woman of his dreams and within himself.

Once again, this book will hook its claws into you from the moment you read the first page. The author paints a picture with no frills that's deep, but manages to avoid a heavy-handed message.

The protagonist is a man who begins reflecting on his life because his life may end. We get a keen view into his psyche about happy times, sad times, regrets, and finally the will to live. Joe tells his story with such a smooth, deft pen that you feel as if you're watching a movie. It's perfect example of man vs. nature and man vs. himself.

Adrift on the ocean, drowning and despairing, the protagonist recalls how he met, and then lost, the love of his life. The story weaves beautifully between the present and the past. Elation and sadness are portrayed with heartfelt emotion, and the reader is drawn into the story. The narrative is engrossing and immensely readable. Joe Leonardi's writing has a lovely sense of flow and this serves to enhance the beauty of the story. I read "The Comfort of Despair" in one sitting, and found it thoroughly captivating. A lovely work.
