We never completely know, or in reality understand, what others are feeling, what pain others are coping, how deeply people are suffering.
To write "The Damaged and Broken" stories, I become another person, I become the fictional character whose narrative I am conveying. It can be difficult, but deep in my soul, I know it is necessary because for my art to impact others, I must not only tell the emotion, or show the emotion, I must have the reader experience the emotion.
I write of those damaged and broken because that is the norm. For everyone one person who overcomes their demons, there are hundreds, if not thousands, who do not — it is their stories I tell.
