I love to read as much as I love to write. Well, almost.
In addition to articles, news, professional journals and blogs, nightly I work on reading a book. Whether a novel, novella or collection of short stories -- I end the day by reading a fellow raconteur's written words.
By choice, I am a slow reader. I am not in a race to see how many books I can go from "The Beginning" to "The End." I read to get lost in a story. I relish each word, allowing the visage the author is creating to flicker to life until my mind's eye brings it into perfectly formed focus, not merely consuming text, but endeavoring to bring to the surface salient subtext. Because of this slow pace, it can take me almost a week to read and completely savor even the shortest novel.
My reading list deliberately includes independent authors. I keep my reading varied, from Hemingway to Ellison, from something published this year, to books published more than a century ago -- yet not matter what I read, I read at least two independent authors each month, no matter the genre.
While many of us hope for the dream of being picked up by a major publisher, until that time, we are driven to not only tell, but to share our stories. Different platforms have made self-publishing affordable, actually free, giving us the ability to share our art with the world -- unfortunately, the world doesn't always notice.
